Nodal is a polypeptide member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily of polypeptides. Like many other members of this superfamily, it is involved in cell differentiation. Nodal plays an essential role in mesoderm formation and axis specification. Nodal null mice die shortly after gastrulation.
